Price Watch: did somebody say free refills?

Tis the season for a festive foray down the high street for a review of hot beverage prices in the latest edition of our Price Watch report.

In a month that’s seen the introduction of this year’s range of seasonal beverages, the only notable November adjustment came from JD Wetherspoon. Alongside its introduction of self-service bean-to-cup machines, the pub chain has added a flat white to the menu, free all day refills on any tea or coffee, and a uniform price reduction to £1.20.

Free refills across the entire menu, and the lower price, makes this highly competitive move the biggest high street shake up this year. The chain is really capitalising on the opportunity for pubs and bars to improve the quality of their coffee and get hot beverage sales at non-traditional times of the day.

Elsewhere on the high street, operators are looking to draw in customers with festive themed menu items. We’re seeing an abundance of typical caramel and gingerbread variations on lattes and hot chocolates, but also some more interesting flavours such as eggnog, clementine and black forest making an appearance.
